Indie Developer Cleverly Responds to Gamers Who Dislike Playing as Women, Inspired by Resident Evil 2

Not all players were pleased with the prospect of only being able to play as a female character in the cozy game Honcho. Some users voiced their concerns to the developer.

The game’s creator took notice of the complaints and devised a creative solution, despite having a limited budget. Inspiration struck from bonus content within the Resident Evil franchise.

Now, Honcho offers the option to play as “Mr. Tofu” — a sentient block of tofu that conceals the player’s body (with the ability to hide hands).

“This game is funded by hopes and dreams, so adding a fully fleshed-out male character with separate unlockable costumes and storylines was simply not feasible. I hope this serves as a reasonable compromise.”

He confirmed that this was not a joke, and the Tofu model was indeed chosen for the male character:

“Who am I to dictate how others enjoy their project? I cannot spend months creating animations, rigging, and testing an entirely new character model. Tofu fit these limitations perfectly, and I chose him because I’m a big fan of Resident Evil 2.”
