Development of the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls VI is ongoing. Since the release of TES V: Skyrim in 2011, which has seen numerous re-releases and ports across various platforms, fans have eagerly awaited its successor. Todd Howard of Bethesda recently shed light on the extended delay between these titles.
He cited several key factors contributing to the prolonged wait. Firstly, the extensive development of Starfield, an entirely new intellectual property rather than a direct sequel, demanded substantial resources and time. This process was further complicated by the challenges posed by the global pandemic and Bethesda’s subsequent acquisition by Microsoft.
Additionally, Howard highlighted Bethesda’s unique position in the industry: the studio can afford to take its time because millions of players continue to actively engage with its older, established projects, such as Skyrim and Fallout. “We also have the advantage of millions of people playing our other games, and we are trying to figure out how to serve those audiences while creating a new one,” he stated.
Therefore, Bethesda is not rushing the release of The Elder Scrolls VI, instead prioritizing a thorough development process and focusing on initiatives like supporting and updating Starfield.
