The actor recently cast as Severus Snape has publicly commented for the first time on his involvement in the highly anticipated project.
Paapa Essiedu, confirmed to portray Severus Snape in the upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ series by HBO, revealed he started receiving threats from agitated fans shortly after the casting announcement. In an interview with The Times, Essiedu admitted to frequently encountering aggressive messages across social media platforms, including explicit death threats.
According to Essiedu, a portion of the negative feedback stems from his physical appearance not aligning with J.K. Rowling’s textual descriptions of the character. This disparity has sparked a wave of criticism among some viewers, who view the casting choice as a departure from the established canon. However, the actor expressed his belief that many of these comments are fueled not merely by discontent with the adaptation but also by underlying racism.
Despite the emotional impact, Essiedu emphasized his steadfast commitment to the role. He stated that the hostile reaction has, in fact, strengthened his determination:
“This negativity only fuels me. It further motivates me to make this character my own because I remember how I felt as a child. I imagined myself at Hogwarts on a broomstick, and the thought that a child like me can see themselves in this world. This motivates me not to be afraid of those who say they would rather I die than do work I will truly be proud of.”

The first season of the ‘Harry Potter’ series is expected to premiere in the first half of 2027.
