Reports indicate that Nintendo is scaling back production of its upcoming Switch 2 console while simultaneously preparing for the launch of a revised model.
Recent information suggests that the Japanese company is developing a new version of the device, which will feature not only aesthetic alterations but also significant functional changes. This reportedly includes a replaceable battery, designed to comply with new European Union regulations.
The updated Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to hit the market in the next financial year (between March 31, 2026, and April 1, 2027). This timeline suggests Nintendo is accelerating its development process to ensure the hardware meets European legal requirements.
Furthermore, this strategic shift isn’t limited to hardware revisions. Nintendo has reportedly reduced its Switch 2 production target for the current quarter from an anticipated 6 million units to approximately 4 million, citing lower-than-expected demand, particularly in the United States.
This situation is somewhat surprising, considering the console’s initial record-breaking launch performance, which was followed by a subsequent decline in sales. President Shuntaro Furukawa has acknowledged that sales outside of Japan have been “weaker than anticipated.”
