Electronic Arts (EA) has initiated a new wave of layoffs across several studios involved in the Battlefield series, including Criterion Games, DICE, Ripple Effect Studios, and Motive Studio. This decision comes as the game faces deteriorating user metrics and overall player dissatisfaction following its release.
The precise number of affected employees has not been disclosed. The company cited “resource reallocation” aimed at further developing the franchise as the reason for the cuts, confirming that all four studios will continue their operations.
While Battlefield 6’s launch was remarkably successful, selling approximately 7 million copies in just three days and becoming a top seller in the US in 2025, the game encountered significant post-release challenges. Critics gave the single-player campaign a lukewarm reception, though multiplayer was received more warmly. However, initial “mostly positive” user reviews on Steam quickly shifted to “mixed” within three months due to a series of controversial updates.
Players voiced strong criticism regarding changes to cosmetics and movement mechanics, aggressive monetization practices, and the controversial use of generative AI for in-game item creation.
