Warframe developer Digital Extremes is eager to create a version of their free-to-play game specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2, but a significant hurdle stands in their way: the unavailability of development kits. The studio has yet to receive any, citing a substantial backlog for these essential devices.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Digital Extremes CEO Steve Sinclair reiterated the team`s strong desire to leverage the Switch 2`s high-speed cores and other advanced features for a custom Warframe build. He emphasized, “there`s just such a backlog for dev kits.”
Sinclair confirmed that the studio “definitely has plans” for a tailored Warframe experience on the Switch 2. While the game will be playable on Nintendo`s upcoming hybrid console through backward compatibility, a dedicated version aims to optimize performance and features. Warframe, originally launched in 2013, made its debut on the first Switch in late 2018.
This situation aligns with recent reports indicating that the scarcity of Switch 2 development kits is impeding third-party game announcements for the new console. Even major publishers like Capcom and Sega are reportedly awaiting increased access to these critical tools.
Despite being a decade old, Warframe continues to be recognized as one of the best free-to-play games available. Furthermore, it ranked among the top 10 gaming franchises last year, according to GameSpot`s parent company, Fandom. In parallel, Digital Extremes is also developing Soulframe, a new free-to-play, open-world fantasy multiplayer RPG.
