“Screamboat”: Disney-Inspired Slasher Movie Coming to 4K Blu-Ray

It`s a modern cinematic certainty: the moment a cherished intellectual property enters the public domain, a slasher film adaptation swiftly follows. This trend has been observed with Winnie the Pooh and, more recently, with Steamboat Willie. The iconic 1928 Disney character, a precursor to Mickey Mouse, officially entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. Soon after, he was menacingly re-envisioned in the animated horror-comedy short, Screamboat.

Fans can now anticipate its Blu-ray release on December 9, which includes a premium 4K Steelbook edition. This two-disc set features both 4K and standard Blu-ray copies. The UHD version boasts native 4K resolution with HDR10 and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Its cover art presents a deceptively cute Steamboat Willie waving, though a closer inspection reveals he`s surrounded by carnage. The back cover showcases a CG-render of Willie overlooking the New York City skyline.

Screamboat Bonus Features

The Blu-ray release, while not extensive in its extras, includes several appealing additions. Viewers can look forward to deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary, and an audio commentary track featuring David Howard Thornton, the actor behind Willie.

  • Deleted Scenes

Screamboat`s announcement closely followed Steamboat Willie`s public domain entry. The film portrays a malevolent version of the classic mouse, now warped by years of neglect, as he captains a late-night New York ferry. Unsuspecting passengers become victims of Willie`s bloody rampage.

Although some critics might view it as a forgettable cash-in, Screamboat gains significance through its ties to the broader Terrifier horror universe. The producers of Terrifier 2 and 3 are behind this project, and David Howard Thornton, renowned as Art the Clown in the Terrifier series, embodies the furry villain Willie for this movie.

Released in April, Screamboat has garnered mixed reviews. However, for those seeking extreme violence, practical effects, and a straightforward, no-frills horror experience featuring a murderous mouse, this film could be a worthwhile watch. Its impressive ultraviolence offers pure, unadulterated shock value, making it a movie you can enjoy without needing to overthink things.
