A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Valve Corporation, accusing the company of operating an illegal gambling system through loot boxes in its video games. The lawsuit, filed on March 9 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, alleges that Valve knowingly managed this system, exploiting random reward mechanics to extract money from users.

Hagens Berman, the legal firm representing the plaintiffs, stated its intention to hold Valve accountable and secure restitution for consumers. The firm’s founder and managing partner, Steve Berman, commented that Valve built an entire system against ordinary people simply trying to have fun.

The complaint further highlights that loot boxes were designed using psychological tactics to encourage increased spending, and that these mechanics can negatively impact minors. Concurrently, the authorities of New York State have also initiated their own lawsuit against Valve, raising similar accusations regarding the transformation of loot boxes into a form of gambling.
