Ubisoft CEO Cites Star Wars Brand Challenges for Outlaws’ Sales Shortfall

Ubisoft`s Star Wars Outlaws, despite positive critical reception, did not meet sales expectations. CEO Yves Guillemot attributed this underperformance to the “turbulent period” the Star Wars brand was experiencing, citing recent projects that had negatively impacted its image. He shared these insights during a Q&A session at the company`s 2025 general meeting.

According to Guillemot, “Outlaws launched into a somewhat unstable environment for the Star Wars franchise.” Prior to the game`s release, the brand had faced a string of mixed or negative reactions, including the critical disappointment of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the divisive TV series The Acolyte, and the lukewarm reception of The Book of Boba Fett.

It should also be noted that Outlaws itself drew criticism upon release for its sluggish introductory mission, technical glitches, and numerous bugs. However, many of these problems have reportedly been resolved since the game`s initial launch last year, with protagonist Kay Vess`s narrative continuing through two DLCs: Wild Card and A Pirate`s Fortune.

Whether Ubisoft will develop more Star Wars titles remains uncertain, particularly with the establishment of a new division, led by Charlie Guillemot (Yves` son), dedicated to core IPs. Nevertheless, other studios are actively working on various Star Wars games.

For instance, Saber Interactive has confirmed that the Knights of the Old Republic remake is still underway. Skydance New Media is developing an unannounced Star Wars game, and strategy enthusiasts can anticipate Star Wars: Zero Company.
