Sony has announced a significant software update for its popular handheld streaming device, the PlayStation Portal, scheduled for release on March 18th. This update is poised to substantially enhance the visual experience for users, particularly those engaged in remote play and cloud streaming.
The main highlight of the upcoming patch is the introduction of a new “1080p High Quality Mode.” This feature is designed to elevate image fidelity during remote gaming sessions and cloud-streamed content, offering a noticeable improvement over the standard display options.
Upon installing the update, PlayStation Portal owners will gain the option to select “1080p High Quality Mode” for both remote play and cloud streaming. While this mode prioritizes superior picture quality, it will naturally require a greater amount of internet bandwidth. It will serve as an alternative to the existing “1080p Standard” mode, providing users with a choice based on their internet connection and preference for visual clarity.
Sony’s insights reveal a growing trend in cloud streaming’s popularity. The company noted a remarkable 162% increase in active cloud streaming users in January 2026 compared to the previous year. Furthermore, statistics indicate that more than half of all PlayStation Portal owners are subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium, underscoring a strong engagement with Sony’s premium gaming services.
