Marathon Players Discover Game-Breaking Movement Exploit for ‘Thief,’ Demand Urgent Fix from Bungie

Marathon Thief character using grappling hook

The grappling hook mechanic is completely disrupting game balance in Marathon.

The Marathon player community is currently buzzing with discussion surrounding an unexpectedly powerful movement mechanic linked to the ‘Thief’ character. Players have discovered a specific combination of actions that grants a significant, potentially game-breaking advantage.

At the core of the issue is the grappling hook. Under normal circumstances, it allows for quick traversal over medium distances, providing the Thief with an edge in mobility and loot collection. However, players have found that by combining a slide, a jump, and then immediately activating the grappling hook, they can achieve significantly higher speeds.

Executing a slide, quickly jumping, and then activating the hook provides the character with a powerful burst of acceleration. Crucially, unlike other ‘shells’ (character types) whose frequent dashes cause overheating, this technique demands almost no resources. The only cost is the slide itself, and the ability’s cooldown instantly resets, allowing the move to be repeated continuously.

Unsurprisingly, this discovery has ignited a wave of criticism within the community. Players are widely calling it a serious exploit that Bungie needs to address and fix immediately.
