GreedFall II: Critical Disappointment and a Blow to Nacon’s Ambitions

The release of GreedFall 2: The Dying World was anticipated as a lifeline for French publisher Nacon, but initial critical reviews indicate the opposite.

Instead of the anticipated blockbuster, the game achieved a mere 65 points on Metacritic, a score significantly lower than that of its 2019 predecessor. For Nacon, a publisher already grappling with market challenges, this outcome represents a severe setback. The company had placed considerable hopes on its success to bolster the standing of developer Spiders.

Reviewers point to numerous shortcomings, which appear to be the aftermath of a turbulent early access period. The primary complaint centers on the weak narrative pacing, with a dull prologue quickly deterring players from continuing. Technical issues, an abundance of bugs, and controversial changes to the combat system, described as cumbersome and overcomplicated, are also frequently cited.

Some publications, including Gameliner, go as far as to label the game’s current state a “catastrophe,” criticizing its flat characters and underdeveloped plot.

Nevertheless, the game still emanates the spirit of classic RPGs. Fans of the genre might find appeal in elements reminiscent of Dragon Age: Origins and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. After a lengthy introduction, players can discern hallmark features of Spiders’ projects: political intrigue, a unique world, and well-developed character relationships. Yet, critics suggest the studio “bit off more than it could chew.”
