From Memes to Video Game: Thomas the Tank Engine Arrives on PC and Consoles

Thomas the Tank Engine, a familiar face from countless modifications and internet memes, now embarks on a new gaming mission in Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor.

Premiering on March 17, 2026, Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor represents Dovetail Games’ effort to adapt the beloved brand into a video game. The developers have created a semi-open world inviting young players to freely explore the iconic Island of Sodor. The project is clearly tailored for a younger audience.

Gameplay centers around simulator-style tasks, ranging from cargo transportation to engaging story missions. Players can take control of Thomas, Percy, or Gordon. The game emphasizes accessible controls and a gentle pace, ensuring it’s enjoyable for even the youngest gamers. Sodor is portrayed as a cohesive environment featuring exploratory elements and a recognizable fairy-tale aesthetic.

While Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor isn’t positioned as the year’s biggest release, it aims to carve out its own niche. However, initial performance has been underwhelming: the peak concurrent player count on Steam reached only around 1098. This marks one of the weakest launches in Dovetail Games’ history and the lowest metric for the Train Sim World franchise, which serves as the foundation for the Thomas game.
