NVIDIA DLSS 5 promises enhanced visual fidelity for future games, sparking a passionate debate.

The highly anticipated announcement of NVIDIA DLSS 5 at GTC 2026 has ignited considerable discussion across social media platforms. While seasoned experts from Digital Foundry, who were given a preview, have lauded the advanced technology, a vocal segment of the gaming community has accused NVIDIA of implementing “artificial filters” and showing a disregard for the creative work of artists.

Georgian Avasilcutei, a veteran game developer known for his contributions to titles such as Dishonored 2 and Hogwarts Legacy, has publicly addressed the controversy. He asserted that many critics are operating from a position of profound misunderstanding, metaphorically standing at the “peak of ignorance” when evaluating a technology they do not comprehend.

“After all this discussion about DLSS 5, I’ve come to the conclusion that most people discussing the topic are completely unaware of what they don’t know… they are at the peak of ignorance and don’t even realize how little they understand.”

The developer’s principal argument is that DLSS 5 is being incorrectly conflated with generative AI image tools. He clarified that the technology does not “hallucinate” new content. Instead, it meticulously utilizes existing engine data – including precise geometry, textures, and lighting information – to intelligently refine and improve illumination and shadows, aspects that would otherwise demand substantial performance sacrifices from the hardware.

To further illustrate his point, Avasilcutei demonstrated a character’s face under two distinct lighting scenarios: one rendered with conventional lighting and another employing advanced ray tracing. The visual disparity was striking, making the character model appear like two entirely different individuals. DLSS 5, he explained, empowers developers to achieve the latter, more sophisticated visual outcome with a significantly reduced impact on performance.

Avasilcutei also emphasized that the “original artistic vision” in many older games was often constrained by the technological limitations prevalent at their time. In his perspective, AI serves as an invaluable tool, enabling the realization of desired visual results in the present, without the need to wait for the advent of future hardware generations.

“Most people react like Pavlov’s dog – they hear ‘AI’ and immediately start attacking (…) Educate yourselves before getting angry online for no reason.”

The definitive and comprehensive assessment of DLSS 5 will ultimately be made following the eagerly anticipated release of the first commercially available games that officially incorporate and support the technology.
