Capcom’s Monster Hunter Stories 3: The Highest-Rated Game in the Series

Capcom celebrates another successful release. The latest installment in the popular Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Stories 3, has garnered high critical acclaim since its launch.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection has achieved an impressive 85% on OpenCritic, making it the highest-rated entry in the spin-off Stories sub-series. For context, Monster Hunter Stories 2 scored 81%, while the original Monster Hunter Stories received 79%. This indicates that Capcom is successfully evolving the brand.

Reviewers highly praise the enhanced RPG system and the unique concept of Riders — heroes who forge deep bonds with monsters and battle alongside them. The more mature storyline, delving into a conflict between two kingdoms and the mystery of the Rathalos twins, also receives significant mention. Further lauded aspects include world exploration, the ability to tame monsters, and an improved turn-based combat system with a greater emphasis on tactics and strategic team building.

However, reviews also include some criticisms. Reviewers point out an uneven pacing in the main campaign and repetitive side quests. The visual style is described as vibrant, but it’s noted that it doesn’t always match the fidelity of major AAA productions. Some journalists also find that the initial RPG mechanics might seem overly complex for new players.
