Fans of Japanese horror can breathe a sigh of relief. The first reviews for the remake of the cult classic Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, released for PlayStation 5 and PC, have appeared online.
Gaming publications unanimously praise the successful revival of the classic. On the aggregator Metacritic, the project received predominantly positive reviews: 74% based on 39 reviews for the PS5 version and 82% after 13 reviews for PC. Reviewers highly appreciated the dense, chilling atmosphere, excellent sound design, and faithful adherence to the original terrifying story of Minakami village.
Special attention was given to the improved gameplay mechanics involving the Camera Obscura – encounters with ghosts have become more dynamic and engaging. The remake’s visual execution makes a strong impression, and exploring the gloomy locations effectively builds a sense of fear and despair.
However, it wasn’t without its criticisms: some reviewers pointed out the fixed 30 FPS frame rate, as well as occasionally drawn-out and monotonous combat sequences.
Nevertheless, the gaming industry as a whole has warmly welcomed the return of this genre legend. For long-time fans of the series, it will be a terrifying yet captivating journey, and for new players, an excellent opportunity to experience one of the most atmospheric and frightening games in video game history.
