Zach Cregger, known for directing “Barbarian” and “Weapons,” is set to bring a new “Resident Evil” adaptation to cinemas next year. In a recent interview, Cregger highlighted his deep connection to the Capcom franchise, explaining that his passion for the games he grew up playing has been the guiding force behind his film`s vision.
“I`ve played all the games; I`ve played `Resident Evil 4` a hundred times. I`m obsessed with them,” Cregger shared with ComicBook. “I just want to tell a story that truly honors the feeling you get when you play the games. I haven`t seen the movies, that`s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That`s just a playground I adore—I think this movie is going to be phenomenal.”
In contrast to most previous “Resident Evil” cinematic versions, predominantly directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, which were quite loose adaptations featuring original storylines centered on Milla Jovovich`s character, Cregger aims for authenticity. While he doesn`t intend to slavishly follow every lore detail, as he clarified in another interview, he doesn`t plan to “break any major rules” of the franchise. His primary goal is to create a film that “feels authentic to the game experience.”
Regarding the games themselves, the next main installment, “Resident Evil: Requiem,” is scheduled for a February 2026 release. It will transport players back to the ruins of Raccoon City for a fresh survival-horror adventure and will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, a mobile spin-off titled “Resident Evil: Survival Unit” is in development. Zach Cregger`s “Resident Evil” film is slated for release on September 18 next year.
