Xbox Controllers Gain a Convenient New Feature on Windows 11

Microsoft is currently testing a significant new feature for Xbox controllers on Windows 11, aiming to enhance user convenience and streamline multitasking.

This upcoming update will allow users to access the “Task View” by simply long-pressing the Xbox button on their controller while using a PC. This makes it considerably easier and faster to switch between various applications, such as seamlessly moving from an immersive game session to a communication app like Discord, without needing to reach for a keyboard or mouse.

It`s important to note that this functionality is presently exclusive to preview builds of Windows 11. Microsoft has clarified that this new tweak will not alter any existing functions of the Xbox button. For instance, a short press will still activate the Game Bar, and holding the button down will continue to power off the controller.

This change is particularly relevant for the highly anticipated ROG Xbox Alley handheld devices. As these portable gaming systems will run on Windows 11 and feature an integrated Xbox button, they are expected to implement this new Task View access method once it rolls out to the general public on PC. This integration will provide Alley users with a familiar and efficient way to manage their applications on the go.

Microsoft previously announced that the ROG Xbox Alley handhelds are set to launch on October 16. Two distinct models will be available to consumers: a more affordable option featuring a 720p display, and the premium Xbox Alley X, which boasts a sharper 1080p display. While exact pricing details for these portable devices remain unconfirmed, earlier reports suggested a starting price of around $550 for the base model and approximately $900 for the premium version, offering users choices based on their budget and display preferences.
