WoW: Midnight: The Sunwell Under Siege

At the Gamescom Opening Night ceremony, Blizzard unveiled the opening cinematic for the next World of Warcraft expansion, Midnight. The video depicts a full-scale invasion of Quel`Thalas, the Blood Elf homeland, by Xal`atath, the current main antagonist of the Warcraft universe. Blood Elf leaders Lor`themar and Liadrin confront Xal`atath and her Void creations, but their resistance seems insufficient.

Xal`atath`s objective appears to be the Sunwell—a potent magical font that has repeatedly been targeted by hostile forces throughout Warcraft`s history. Previously, it was corrupted by Arthas in Warcraft 3 to create Kel`thuzad, and Prince Kael`thas Sunstrider later attempted to restore it to open a portal for the Burning Legion invasion. Players thwarted Kael`thas in The Burning Crusade, after which the Sunwell was restored as a source of both arcane and holy power.

Xal`atath`s precise intentions for the Sunwell remain unclear, but they are undoubtedly sinister. Fortunately, the Light actively intervenes, empowering Liadrin and Alliance forces, helping to push back the Void army. Maria Hamilton, WoW`s Associate Design Director, emphasized that unlike previous invasions, the Light is notably and visibly involved this time, and players will encounter previously unseen Void creatures.

This cinematic offers the first true glimpse into Xal`atath`s power, showcasing her ability to inflict mental anguish. Cinematic Director Ben Dai noted that the team intentionally refrained from revealing her full potential, believing that less shown makes her appear more powerful.

Following this initial battle, players will begin their adventures in the Midnight expansion. It will revamp Quel`Thalas, introduce full player housing, add a new allied race—the Haranir, bring significant changes to the transmogrification system, and offer a third, Void-powered specialization tree for Demon Hunters. World of Warcraft: Midnight is scheduled for release in early 2026.
