Valve is Reportedly Abandoning New CS2 Cases Following Loot Box Lawsuit, Dataminer Claims

It appears that Valve is altering its approach to how items are distributed within Counter-Strike 2. This potential shift comes in the wake of recent legal action filed against the company regarding its implementation of loot boxes in games like CS2.

A prominent dataminer within the Counter-Strike 2 community, known by the handle Thour, has shared his insights on the situation. Thour suggests that Valve has made the decision to move away from the traditional case system in CS2, opting instead to fully transition to a new “terminal” system.

Unlike standard cases, where players immediately receive random in-game items upon opening, the “terminal” mechanic operates differently. When a player opens a terminal, they are presented with an offer to purchase a specific item, which is chosen randomly. The player then has the option to either buy the offered item or refresh the offer, though this refresh option is available a limited number of times.

Thour’s conclusion is largely based on observations from the March Counter-Strike 2 update, which introduced a terminal featuring the “Dead Hand” collection.

“Now that the ‘Terminal’ includes a collection of gloves and knives, I am even more convinced that there will be no more cases. Rest in peace, cases: August 14, 2013 to March 31, 2025.”
