Fortnite and Rocket League are launching their second annual Summer Road Trip event on Tuesday, July 22, offering players a chance to acquire a variety of complimentary items. Participants can earn a free skin, a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 vehicle body, and a Red Hot Chili Peppers jam track. While the Corvette and its accompanying wheels are obtainable by playing either Fortnite or Rocket League, unlocking all available rewards will require engagement with both titles. The event concludes on August 4 for Rocket League players, and on August 7 for Fortnite participants.
In Fortnite, players will receive a new quest daily, requiring them to gain XP while in a party across specific modes. These quests will alternate each day between Epic-created modes, such as Battle Royale and Reload, and user-generated games. Each completed quest unlocks a new reward; for instance, finishing one quest grants “The Zephyr Song” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, while completing eight quests awards the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 car body. Many of the intervening rewards are cosmetic filler items like sprays and emoticons, but there are also more notable additions such as a high-quality wrap and a rubber ducky pickaxe.
The Rocket League component of the event is structured in two phases. Most quests and rewards become available on the first day, with the final quest to unlock the Corvette accessible from July 28. Importantly, the initial set of Rocket League quests also includes rewards specifically for Fortnite. Successfully making 15 saves during the Summer Road Trip will unlock the “Hairpin” skin for Fortnite, and playing a private match with mutators activated will grant a Fortnite glider designed to resemble a Rocket League ball. These particular Fortnite items can only be earned through Rocket League gameplay.
This year`s Summer Road Trip features more rewards and has generated significantly less controversy compared to last year`s event, which famously offered the criticized Tesla Cybertruck as its main prize, along with Green Day`s “Holiday” jam track. A notable new aspect this year is the provision of rewards obtainable in Rocket League that are exclusively usable in Fortnite, such as the glider and the Hairpin skin.
Most of the rewards from this year`s Summer Road Trip could eventually appear in the item shop after the event concludes. It`s highly probable that at least the jam track and the Corvette will be available for purchase sooner rather than later, following the precedent set by the Cybertruck, which was added to the item shop immediately after last August`s event. The only truly exclusive item confirmed is the ZR1 Circuit decal for the Corvette.
The Summer Road Trip is not the only major cosmetic update for Fortnite this week. On Friday, the Fantastic Four will also make their debut in the item shop, available as both character skins and themed footwear.
