“Twisted Metal” Season 2: Stars Reveal What’s Next for John Doe and Quiet

Two years following its debut, the second season of Peacock and Sony Pictures` “Twisted Metal” series, inspired by Sony`s popular video game franchise, is set to premiere this week. After an eventful first season, primary characters John Doe (Anthony Mackie) and Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz) face fresh challenges. The new season heavily features a vehicular combat tournament, a concept familiar to game enthusiasts, orchestrated by Anthony Carrigan`s Calypso.

On a visit to the “Twisted Metal” Season 2 set in Toronto, the cast and crew, including Mackie and Beatriz, shared insights into the upcoming season. While many plot specifics remain undisclosed, Mackie and Beatriz offered a glimpse of what viewers can anticipate. Be advised, this article contains spoilers for the “Twisted Metal” series.

Season 2 sees John successfully completing his delivery from Raven (Neve Campbell), a task that grants him citizenship in New San Francisco. His days of hazardous missions are over; he now resides within the city`s secure and pristine environment.

“`He`s just living a regular life now, wearing polos, taking showers. Everything is different,` Mackie explained. `Throughout the season, we`ll explore how this new reality impacts him and transforms his character.`”

Mackie characterized John as a `man-child` in the first season, but his new existence is now confined by the `structured complex` of New San Francisco. Teaser visuals strongly suggest John is growing restless and itching to return to his former life.

“`It`s akin to returning home from college for the holidays during your freshman or sophomore year and feeling utterly stir-crazy,` Mackie elaborated. `That pretty much encapsulates John`s current situation. He`s entered this structured environment, yet he still longs for the thrill of being the milkman, for the freedom of the open road. It`s about adapting and conforming to the new, while simultaneously yearning for the old ways.`”

Mackie noted a personal connection to John, stating that both he and the character share a tendency not to take themselves too seriously.

“`I`m a glass-half-full kind of person,` Mackie remarked. `If you take yourself too seriously, honestly, stay away from me. John is similar; for him, every day is a fresh start, a blessing. There`s only one way to avoid aging, right?`”

Stephanie Beatriz`s character, Quiet, endured significant trauma in Season 1, witnessing her brother`s murder. Her initial drive was revenge, but her path shifted, transforming her into a Robin Hood-esque figure dedicated to aiding the oppressed and challenging established powers.

Viewers can anticipate this altruistic focus to continue in Season 2, with Beatriz stating that Quiet is `set on` helping others and doing good, within the constraints of an apocalyptic world. Furthermore, she`ll spend more time driving her cherished car, Roadkill, this season.

“`She`s matured significantly, both personally and as a driver,` Beatriz added. `Her driving skills, in particular, have evolved tremendously, and that will definitely be showcased in the series.`”

Quiet played a pivotal role in John`s life and evolution during Season 1, though they parted ways at its conclusion. Yet, will they truly remain separated? It seems unlikely, as all indications suggest an epic reunion for John and Quiet.

Mackie further revealed that Season 2 will feature a greater emphasis on practical stunts, thanks to the expertise of stunt coordinator Logan Holladay, who previously worked as Ryan Gosling`s stunt double in the stunt-centric film `Fall Guy.`

“`We minimize CGI usage,` he stated. `Much of what you see is practical, which, in my opinion, gives the show a genuinely cool and distinct appearance. It imparts a feeling that`s often lost in similar productions when they rely too heavily on CGI, making things look unnatural.`”

Sweet Tooth, another fan-favorite “Twisted Metal” character, returns with voice work by comedian Will Arnett and physical performance by wrestler and actor Samoa Joe. Showrunner MJ Smith confirmed that Sweet Tooth will have an even larger presence in Season 2, with Samoa Joe describing his character as the `ultimate agent of chaos` this season.

“`He`s someone who consistently acts on his impulses, whenever and however he pleases,` Samoa Joe explained. `As the season progresses, you`ll discover new adversaries emerging in his life, and he`ll be desperate to eliminate them immediately – but he won`t be able to.`”

Due to the strict rules of Calypso`s tournament, Sweet Tooth is unable to simply dispatch people as he did in Season 1, a restriction that proves `maddening` for the character.

“`It`s like a child desperately wanting that cookie in the jar,` Samoa Joe remarked.”

Regarding his interactions with Samoa Joe, Mackie admitted he remains `deathly afraid of Joe,` partly because Sweet Tooth is frequently covered in oil, leading to some `sticky` encounters.

“`We`re friends, we hang out, but I honestly don`t think he likes me, given what he puts me through in real life,` Mackie chuckled. `The toughest part is he`s always oiled up.` He joked that after grappling with Samoa Joe, he`s left with what he calls `Sweet Tooth nipple` impressions from the oil. `I always end up covered in baby oil smudges.`”

“`It`s a complete mess. But what are you going to do, hit him?` Mackie quipped. `No, you`re going to run, right? It`s like that Pinky and the Brain dynamic, though I`m not sure which one I am.`”

The second season of `Twisted Metal` is scheduled to premiere on July 31 on Peacock.
