The highly anticipated sequel to the animated film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” titled “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” is set to hit theaters in April 2026. Nintendo officially announced the premiere date – April 3, 2026 – during its latest Nintendo Direct presentation. Producer Chris Meledandri noted that while the film carries the “Super Mario Galaxy” name, it will appeal to fans of all Mario games.
Confirmed Cast Returns
The confirmed cast includes many stars returning from the 2023 film:
- Chris Pratt as Mario
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
- Jack Black as Bowser
- Charlie Day as Luigi
- Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
- Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
The first teaser trailer has already been unveiled, showcasing the movie`s impressive visuals. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, directors of the 2023 blockbuster Mario animated movie, are returning, along with screenwriter Matthew Fogel and composer Brian Tyler.
The first Super Mario Bros. movie was a massive success, grossing $1.36 billion at the box office. This made it the second-highest-grossing film of 2023 (only behind “Barbie”) and the highest-earning video game movie of all time. The sequel was announced relatively quickly on Mario Day (March 10) 2024. Alongside this announcement, Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination confirmed the sequel`s release date as April 3, 2026, almost exactly three years after the original film`s premiere.
The year 2025 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, and to celebrate, Nintendo also plans to release Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the new Switch 2 console.
