The Last of Us Showrunner Confirms Longer Season 3

Showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 will be notably longer than Season 2, aiming for a runtime more akin to the extensive first season. This announcement comes as the acclaimed HBO series is poised for potential Emmy recognition next month.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin refrained from detailing Season 3`s specific pacing but unequivocally stated, “Season 3 will be longer than Season 2. Season 3 will be more on par with Season 1. More bang for the buck.”

Addressing the recent news of co-showrunner Neil Druckmann`s departure from the series, Mazin assured fans that this would not drastically alter the show`s creative direction. He clarified his long-standing role as the primary writer, often working in solitude, and highlighted the collaborative planning for future storylines that was completed during Season 2`s production. Mazin also noted Druckmann`s ongoing full-time responsibilities at Naughty Dog, reinforcing that the series` development would largely proceed as usual.

Looking ahead, Season 3 is slated to delve deeper into the narrative of Abby, with actress Kaitlyn Dever taking on a more prominent role. Laura Bailey, who originated the character of Abby in The Last of Us Part 2 video game, has already expressed praise for Dever`s live-action portrayal. HBO has indicated an anticipated release for the third season in 2027.
