The Halloween Game: Michael Myers Reimagined as a Serial Killer’s Hitman

Filmmaker John Carpenter made a significant impact at Gamescom 2025. His involvement extends beyond just Toxic Commando and Directive 8020, as the first trailer for the long-awaited Halloween game was also unveiled. Carpenter is attached as an executive producer for this game, which is based on his iconic slasher horror classic.

Developed by Illfonic, known for licensed horror titles such as Friday the 13th and Predator, in partnership with Gun Media and others, the Halloween game features asymmetrical multiplayer. However, it aims to be more than just a Friday the 13th clone with Michael Myers. The developers confirm it will offer both a single-player and a multiplayer horror experience.

Unlike Friday the 13th`s challenge-based single-player, Halloween will feature a full narrative story mode, developed in collaboration with Pollard Studio. Design director Jordan Mathewson highlighted its cinematic elements and deeper story, promising a distinct experience from the multiplayer. While gameplay details remain scarce, playing as Michael Myers in the story mode is described as a “serial killer`s version of Hitman,” offering a unique perspective.

The game is faithfully based on the 1978 Halloween movie, immersing players in the quiet, suburban town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Mathewson confirmed that the setting, including decorations, characters, and clothing, will accurately reflect the 1970s era, influencing the single-player experience significantly compared to their prior games.

While Haddonfield`s suburban streets are iconic, Mathewson confirmed that the game will feature a variety of maps, extending beyond the familiar neighborhood seen in the film. These diverse locations will offer different sizes and playstyles, enriching the player experience.

Large sandbox maps are essential for Halloween`s deliberate, stealth-focused gameplay. Unlike Friday the 13th where Jason hunted counselors within a time limit, Haddonfield functions as a living 1970s suburban simulation, populated by NPCs. Michael Myers, akin to Agent 47, must patiently observe targets from the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Conversely, other players assume the role of civilians, working to avert the massacre by convincing targeted townspeople to flee their homes.

Matthewson emphasized the stealth aspect for both sides: Michael Myers adopts a methodical approach to remain unseen, while civilians aim to avoid detection until they can confront him. Similar to Hitman, Myers` rampage becomes significantly harder if he exposes himself. Civilian players can escalate the situation by contacting the police; as law enforcement investigates and uncovers evidence, more officers arrive, posing a greater challenge to the powerful killer.

However, without concrete gameplay footage, questions linger. Can small-town police truly deter Michael Myers? Given his imposing nature, how will his stealth mechanics work beyond conventional hiding? Furthermore, adhering strictly to the 1978 film, his most grounded portrayal, raises questions about the scope of his abilities against both players and the town.

Illfonic plans to disclose further details later. Mathewson assured that extensive research and direct collaboration with IP holder Compass International Pictures are underway to accurately portray Michael`s capabilities while maintaining the grounded, vulnerable feeling of the 1978 film. This approach aims to deliver an interesting, fun, and powerful experience from Michael`s perspective.

The Halloween game is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.
