The upcoming remake of Final Fantasy Tactics, officially titled “The Ivalice Chronicles,” presents an exciting opportunity for both additional in-game content and the potential development of a full-fledged sequel. However, the realization of these possibilities is largely dependent on enthusiastic financial support from the fanbase, as future success is not guaranteed.
During a recent discussion with Wired, game director Kazutoyo Maehiro touched upon the prospect of integrating features from the 2007 PlayStation Portable release, “Final Fantasy Chronicles: War of the Lions,” into the new remake. Maehiro clarified that the primary objective for the remake was a faithful reconstruction of the original game. While acknowledging fan interest in popular elements like the Onion Knight and Black Knight classes, he stated that no definitive promises could be made regarding their eventual inclusion in “The Ivalice Chronicles.”
To ensure accessibility for new players, the remake will introduce a “Squire” difficulty option. Additionally, “The Ivalice Chronicles” will utilize the script from “War of the Lions” for its integrated classic version. The viability of a direct sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics will be heavily influenced by the remake`s market performance and critical reception.
Maehiro, who contributed as an events planner to the original Final Fantasy Tactics in 1997, shared his perspective that a successful launch of “The Ivalice Chronicles” would naturally prompt discussions about future sequels or the creation of new tactical RPGs. This aligns with sentiments expressed earlier this year by the original game`s art director, who conveyed excitement about the classic title running at 60 frames per second on PlayStation.
The Final Fantasy Tactics remake was officially revealed at PlayStation`s State of Play event in June. It is slated for release on September 30 across a wide array of platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. A notable detail is the offer of a complimentary upgrade for “The Ivalice Chronicles” on Switch 2, though a physical edition for the new hybrid console will not be available.
