Late last year, players observed a striking resemblance between screenshots of Tencent`s upcoming game, Light of Motiram, and Sony`s Horizon series. Sony also took notice and subsequently filed a lawsuit against Tencent. Now, Tencent contends that Sony`s lawsuit lacks merit and should be dismissed.
According to The Game Post, Tencent`s motion to dismiss alleges that Sony is attempting to “fence off a well-established corner of popular culture and declare it Sony`s exclusive domain.” Tencent`s stance is that Sony`s assertion that Horizon Zero Dawn is “like no fictional world created before or since” is contradicted by the game`s own developers and constitutes an “unwarranted monopoly on genre conventions.”
Tencent points out that Horizon Zero Dawn art director Jan-Bart Van Beek acknowledged the game`s similarity to an earlier title, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, in a behind-the-scenes documentary. Tencent claims that Sony initially postponed Horizon`s development due to these similarities before eventually releasing the game.
Sony`s initial complaint referenced a March 2024 meeting between the companies regarding a potential Horizon mobile spin-off game, which Sony ultimately rejected. Tencent`s motion to dismiss acknowledges the meeting but asserts that “no Tencent Holdings executives or employees were present,” and further states that “Sony has failed to provide prima facie evidence that any actions during this meeting caused harm to Sony.”
The motion further argues that Tencent Holdings, Tencent America, and Proxima Beta U.S. should be dismissed from the lawsuit because Sony “cannot specifically substantiate the claims it brings against them.” Light of Motiram is being developed by two Tencent-affiliated entities: Polaris Quest / Aurora Studios and Proxima Beta PTE Ltd., a Singapore-based subsidiary.
Tencent also asserts that since Light of Motiram has not yet been released, “the alleged infringements have not occurred and may, in fact, never occur.”
Shortly after Sony filed the lawsuit, Tencent modified several elements on Light of Motiram`s Steam page, and the Horizon-like imagery was removed. Light of Motiram is anticipated for release in 2027.
