Switch 2 Pro Controller: A Surprising Early Sales Phenomenon

The initial sales figures for the Switch 2 console have been remarkably strong, establishing it as one of the most successful console launches ever. A particularly striking detail within these figures is the unexpected popularity of the premium Pro Controller. Approximately one-third of all early Switch 2 console buyers also opted to purchase this $85 accessory.

According to Circana industry analyst Mat Piscatella, the Switch 2 Pro Controller achieved an impressive 32% “attach rate” during its launch month. This means nearly a third of Switch 2 purchasers added the high-end controller to their cart. Piscatella further noted that the Switch 2 Pro Controller was June`s top-selling accessory by revenue.

Game File reports that about 512,000 Pro Controllers were sold in the U.S. during the Switch 2`s debut month. This is a substantial number, especially considering that the Pro Controller is not essential for console gameplay or any launch titles, and the original Switch`s Pro Controller remains compatible. It`s also worth mentioning that the Pro Controller`s price increased by $5 after its announcement, potentially due to tariff concerns.

While early adopters are often inclined to purchase extra accessories, suggesting that this high attach rate might not persist long-term, it nonetheless represents a significant sales achievement for the new console.

Piscatella, in an interview with IGN, cautioned that a console`s long-term success cannot be definitively predicted solely from its initial sales, as these often reflect the available supply. However, he still commended the Switch 2`s launch month performance as a “helluva good start” towards sustained success.
