During a recent Nintendo Direct livestream, Nintendo officially revealed that both beloved classics, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, are making their way to the Nintendo Switch 2. These iconic space-faring adventures are scheduled to launch on October 2. Fans will have the option to purchase them as a single bundle for $70, or individually at $40 per game.
This highly anticipated re-release is a central part of the ongoing Super Mario 40th Anniversary celebrations. The anniversary festivities also include the unveiling of a new cinematic project, currently referred to as the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which was teased shortly before the game announcement. The movie is slated for a theatrical release in April 2026.
Beyond the Galaxy titles, the Nintendo Direct event featured several other exciting Mario-related announcements. These include the reveal of Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park and Mario Tennis Fever. Completing the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary segment was the announcement of a brand-new game starring Mario`s faithful companion, Yoshi, titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
To provide some historical context, the original Super Mario Galaxy first launched on the Nintendo Wii in 2007, with its critically acclaimed sequel following in 2010, also on the Wii. While the first game saw a re-release as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection for the 35th anniversary in 2020, the upcoming October launch marks the very first time Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be re-released since its initial debut over a decade ago in 2010.
The Nintendo Direct wasn`t solely focused on Mario, with other significant Switch 2 releases also confirmed. Role-playing game enthusiasts can look forward to the Nintendo Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, scheduled for release on January 22. Additionally, the highly anticipated Hades 2`s Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is set to arrive on September 25.
