For fans of Stephen King`s epic post-apocalyptic dark fantasy novel, The Stand, a new companion anthology has recently been released. Titled The End of the World As We Know It: New Tales of Stephen King`s The Stand, this collection offers fresh perspectives within the beloved universe.
Published on August 19, this 800-page hardcover anthology is fully authorized by Stephen King himself and features an introduction penned by the horror master. It serves as an exciting expansion for one of King`s most acclaimed works.
The End of the World As We Know It: New Tales of The Stand
The Stand is widely regarded by many “constant readers” as King`s magnum opus, a sprawling masterpiece of post-apocalyptic fiction with an extensive cast and countless narrative possibilities. It`s this richness that likely inspired the creation of this new anthology.
Edited by Bram Stoker Award-winning horror writers Christopher Golden and Brian Keene, the collection is positioned as an “essential companion” to the classic novel. It features 34 short stories by a diverse group of authors working in horror, thriller, and dark fantasy genres today. Some tales are set within the original timeline, while others explore events occurring after the novel`s conclusion.
The anthology is ingeniously divided into four parts, each sporting a playful subtitle that will resonate with Stephen King enthusiasts:
- Part 1: Down with the Sickness
- Part 2: The Long Walk
- Part 3: Life was such a Wheel
- Part 4: Other Worlds than These

Editions of Stephen King`s The Stand
The new 800-page anthology is roughly the same length as the original 1978 hardcover edition of The Stand. King had to cut approximately 400 pages from his manuscript then due to printing costs. However, in 1990, Scribner released The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition, presenting the unabridged text. This definitive version spans 1,152 pages in hardcover today.
It is highly recommended to read the Complete and Uncut Edition before delving into the new anthology. The novel is available in various formats, including hardcover, trade paperback, mass market paperback, Kindle, and Audible audiobook.
For serious collectors and enthusiasts, a stunning Deluxe Special Edition was released on August 19, coinciding with the new anthology. Limited to 4,000 copies, this lavish printing boasts thicker, high-quality paper, a fine binding, a foil-stamped cover with new artwork by Glenn Chadbourne, and a custom-designed slipcase. This edition is part of Cemetery Dance`s highly limited series of King`s classic novels, a publisher founded by Richard Chizmar, who also contributed to the new anthology. Announced in 2019, this Deluxe Special Edition will never be printed again, making it a valuable collectible.
Adaptations of Stephen King`s The Stand
The enduring popularity of The Stand has led to multiple adaptations. In June, Paramount Pictures announced a new film adaptation, with Doug Liman (known for The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow) slated to direct. This project is still in its early stages, with no script yet, indicating a long wait for fans. Adapting such a monumental novel into a single film presents a significant challenge given its vast scope.
Before the upcoming film, The Stand was adapted for television twice. The first miniseries aired on ABC in 1994, spanning four long episodes totaling over six hours. Paramount`s 2020 miniseries, while more recent, was divided into nine episodes with a total runtime of 8.5 hours. Despite their considerable lengths, both miniseries adaptations often felt like they could only capture fragments of the expansive story. Fans eagerly hope the new film adaptation will prove more successful than the widely criticized Dark Tower movie.
TV Miniseries on Blu-ray
Both television miniseries adaptations are available on Blu-ray for those interested in experiencing them.
