In the 1990s, Todd McFarlane`s `Spawn` comic book was a sensation, becoming Image Comics` flagship series. Its widespread appeal led to toys, an HBO animated series, and a notable 1997 feature film starring Michael Jai White as the protagonist. Decades later, this gritty superhero movie is receiving a limited-edition 4K restoration from Arrow Video, known for its high-quality re-releases of cult films.
The `Spawn Limited Edition` offers both the theatrical and director`s cuts, along with premium packaging, fresh artwork, and exclusive collectibles. Initially priced at $50 for preorders, Amazon is now providing a substantial discount, bringing the cost down to $38. The 4K Limited Edition is set to release on October 7.
Arrow Video meticulously restored both the theatrical and director`s cuts in native 4K (2160p) resolution, utilizing the original camera negatives. Both versions boast High Dynamic Range with Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, complemented by DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and lossless stereo audio.
The Limited Edition features reversible sleeve art, an illustrated booklet containing new commentary, and a double-sided fold-out poster.
The key distinction between the two cuts lies in their tone: the theatrical version was edited to achieve a PG-13 rating by reducing violence, whereas the director`s cut, though only slightly longer (under three minutes), includes this additional violence, earning it an R-rating.
Additionally, a wealth of bonus materials are included, such as a new audio commentary by comic book expert Dave Baxter and fresh interviews with the cast and crew. Archival content, including behind-the-scenes featurettes, promotional items, and previous audio commentaries from DVD and Blu-ray releases, are also present. A comprehensive list of features is provided below.

The film `Spawn` follows Al Simmons, an elite black ops soldier who is brutally murdered by his commanding officer, Jason Wynn (played by Martin Sheen). Sent to hell for his past actions, Simmons is resurrected on Earth by the demon Malebolgia to participate in a larger plot to instigate the apocalypse. Armed with hellish powers, Simmons grapples with his desire for revenge, the dark forces controlling him, and his search for redemption.
While perhaps not reaching the groundbreaking status of `Blade` (released a year later and widely acknowledged for revolutionizing superhero cinema), `Spawn` retains considerable appeal. It confidently embraces its comic book origins, blending commendable practical effects with pioneering CGI for its era to vividly realize the character. Michael Jai White delivers a strong performance as the tormented antihero, complemented by John Leguizamo`s memorable portrayal of Clown, who can transform into the formidable Violator.
A movie night with `Spawn` followed up by `Blade` would make for a great double feature. `Blade` is already available on 4K Blu-ray for only $21.68. Alternatively, you can grab `Blade Trilogy` for just $12 on 1080p Blu-ray.
