Skyblivion: A Comprehensive Remake Beyond a Simple Remaster

Following the recent release of the official Oblivion Remastered, the dedicated developers behind Skyblivion have clarified the scope of their ambitious mod, which has been over ten years in the making. They assert that their project is far more than just a graphical update; it fundamentally “reimagines Oblivion from the ground up.”

Skyblivion aims to fully reconstruct the 2006 open-world RPG within the engine of 2011`s Skyrim, incorporating entirely new content and significant gameplay adjustments. The mod is still on track for its scheduled release in 2025. In their latest development diary, the TESRenewal mod team addressed a common question that has arisen since the official Oblivion Remastered debuted in April: What is the purpose of Skyblivion when an official remaster is already available?

“The answer is straightforward,” the development diary explains. “Skyblivion stands as a full-scale remake that completely re-envisions Oblivion, bringing it up to modern RPG standards. While the official remaster impressively upgrades textures and existing assets, Skyblivion introduces brand-new areas, dungeons, cities, gameplay enhancements, and much more.”

The developers emphasize that Skyblivion is not merely Oblivion running on a new engine. Instead, they state that “every fort, home, cave, and landscape has been meticulously redesigned.”

“We`ve integrated this level of creative detail to breathe new life into a beloved classic that is almost two decades old,” the dev diary highlights.

The remainder of the development diary provides ample evidence supporting the team`s “full-scale remake” claims. For example, it details the recreation of Anvil city to feature an expansive harbor and the introduction of a new Oblivion biome, designed to make the process of closing Oblivion gates “less repetitive and monotonous.”

A comprehensive overhaul of the original game`s “unique” items is also a key feature of Skyblivion. The developers point out that in the original game, most unique items were “unique in name only,” often being simple recolors or slightly modified versions of existing items with minor stat boosts. In Skyblivion, these unique items will be “truly unique,” boasting updated appearances and, for many unique weapons, new attack animations to help players “diversify” their playstyle.

Previous Skyblivion updates have revealed plans for new quests, monsters, a redesigned lockpicking minigame, and even new music, alongside significant updates to the game`s menus and user interface.

While Skyblivion does not yet have a precise release date, the development diary indicates that the team is “confident” in meeting their goal of releasing the mod this year. The mod will be available as a free download for PC users who own both Skyrim: Special Edition and Oblivion: GOTY Deluxe.

“We are excited to showcase more soon and finally deliver Skyblivion into your hands,” the video concludes, “but we still have crucial work to do in finalizing key areas and ensuring Skyblivion meets the proper quality and assurance standards that fans deserve.”

In response to the reveal of Oblivion Remastered, Skyblivion`s project lead commented that the remaster`s release was a “win-win” situation for the community. Notably, Bethesda later gifted complimentary copies of Oblivion Remastered to the entire Skyblivion mod development team.
