Skate Early Access Kicks Off on September 16

Electronic Arts has officially announced that the early access period for the new Skate game will commence on September 16, available to players on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.

This highly anticipated reboot marks a significant return for the beloved skateboarding series, coming after a substantial 15-year hiatus since the release of Skate 3 in 2010. First revealed in 2021, the revamped Skate is envisioned as a free-to-play live-service experience, designed to welcome both long-time devotees of the franchise and newcomers alike.

While specific details about Skate were initially scarce during its early development phases, the past year has seen a steady release of new information. This includes memorable promotional content, notably featuring skateboarder and “I Think You Should Leave” star Tim Robinson. Key confirmed features include an always-online requirement, a business model supported by microtransactions, and a reimagined Flick-it system that promises players the ability to execute impressive and fluid tricks. Additionally, the game is set to offer a fresh approach to its in-game soundtracks and provide extensive customization options for players.

The re-emergence of Skate aligns with a broader resurgence in the popularity of skateboarding video games. In recent years, the gaming landscape has witnessed the arrival of spiritual successors to the Skate formula, such as Skater XL and Session: Skate Sim. Concurrently, the franchise`s historical rival, Tony Hawk`s Pro Skater, also made a triumphant return with acclaimed remakes of its third and fourth installments, further invigorating the genre.

Beyond these major titles, independent game developers have also played a crucial role in revitalizing the skateboarding game scene. Well-received indie projects, including the dynamic OlliOlli series (from the now-defunct Roll7) and the minimalist yet engaging The Ramp, have significantly contributed to defining and celebrating the current vibrant era of skateboarding games.
