Roblox Under Fire: Lawsuits Mount Over Child Safety

Roblox is currently under significant pressure, including a lawsuit from the state of Louisiana, concerning allegations that it has not adequately protected its large user base of children. The company has responded by dismissing some claims as “erroneous,” but reports indicate this lawsuit is likely the first of many as accusations of child endangerment on the platform grow.

As a widely popular game creation platform, Roblox boasts tens of millions of daily active users, with nearly 40% of its audience being children under 13. This demographic has placed the platform under intense scrutiny, with numerous reports claiming that Roblox`s current safety measures are insufficient to protect its young users.

On August 15, shortly after California Congressman Ro Khanna criticized Roblox for insufficient child protection, the state of Louisiana filed a lawsuit. The suit alleges that Roblox:

  • Facilitates the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the exploitation of children.
  • Deliberately fails to implement essential safety controls to protect child users from predators.
  • Deliberately fails to inform parents and child users about potential dangers.

Although Roblox introduced “parent accounts” last October, allowing parents to manage their child`s interactions, critics, including politicians and the new Louisiana lawsuit, argue these measures are still inadequate to ensure child safety.

An August 18 Wired report revealed plans for a significant number of new lawsuits against Roblox, with law firms preparing “a flood” of cases alleging the platform facilitated child exploitation. Attorney Matt Dolman stated his firm alone has around 300 such cases, anticipating over 1,000 lawsuits within the next year. He noted that most of his clients are under 16, with a majority being young girls.

Several lawsuits are already underway, including one from Alabama filed in July. This specific case involves a 14-year-old girl who reportedly met a predator on Roblox, communicated via a messaging app, and was subsequently abducted and assaulted. Both Roblox and the messaging app are named as defendants in that suit.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill asserted that Roblox`s inadequate safety protocols endanger children, claiming the platform prioritizes “user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety.” She urged parents to recognize the “clear and present danger” Roblox poses to their children.

On the same day, Roblox released a comprehensive statement, unusual for ongoing litigation, aiming to “address erroneous claims and misconceptions” about its platform`s safety commitment and track record.

Roblox`s statement highlighted its dedication to child safety through various measures, including continuously improving safety tools, an “industry-leading stance on age-based communication,” a suite of parental controls, and collaborations with law enforcement.

The company reiterated its commitment to fostering “one of the safest online environments,” deeming it crucial for its long-term success. They acknowledged ongoing efforts are needed to ensure a “safe and positive environment for all users.”

Attorney Dolman mentioned a “working group” of lawyers from various firms already engaging with clients who accuse Roblox of failing to protect their children.
