Since Resident Evil 7, the main installments in the iconic horror series have predominantly featured a first-person perspective, a notable shift from the third-person view that Resident Evil 4 had firmly established as the standard for 3D games. While Resident Evil Village initially prioritized a first-person design, a third-person mode was subsequently introduced after its launch. For the highly anticipated Resident Evil Requiem, set to debut next year, players will have the choice of both first-person and third-person modes right from its release. According to the game`s director, this dual-mode approach was primarily implemented to ensure the game wouldn`t be excessively frightening for a segment of players.
In a discussion with GamesRadar, director Koshi Nakanishi detailed his rationale behind using a first-person perspective for Resident Evil 7, aiming to create an experience that was “more immersive and more scary than ever before.” He acknowledged that both media outlets and players largely concurred that it was an incredibly terrifying game, possibly even “too scary” for some.
Nakanishi further elaborated that the overwhelming fear factor of Resident Evil 7 likely deterred some players from either completing or even initiating the game. With Requiem, his objective was to broaden the game`s appeal and make it accessible to as many players as possible. He explained his philosophy, stating:
“If you started the game off in first-person perspective, and you’re finding it’s too much, then third-person is almost a way to step slightly back from that level of horror and make it slightly easier to deal with by having the character on screen as a kind of avatar of yourself.”
Considering Nakanishi`s previous remarks suggesting that Resident Evil Requiem could be the “most extreme” entry in the series to date, the strategic inclusion of a third-person option is expected to be a highly welcomed feature for many in the gaming community.
Resident Evil Requiem is officially scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, and will be available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.
