The director of the forthcoming Resident Evil film adaptation shared his ideas for the movie, mentioning he intends to deviate from the original game lore in certain aspects, expecting this might displease some fans.
Speaking to SFX magazine (as reported by GamesRadar), Zach Cregger stated his goal isn`t strict adherence to the game`s lore. While he didn`t detail specific alterations, he affirmed he won`t violate any core established rules of the series.
He also reassured audiences of his deep affection for the Resident Evil games, confirming he`s played every title and holds a particular appreciation for Resident Evil 4, which he`s replayed countless times.
Rather than rigidly following the game lore, Cregger aims to craft a narrative that captures the authentic feel and experience of playing the games.
Despite his genuine passion for the series and desire to tell an authentic story, Cregger is aware that online criticism is inevitable regardless of his approach.
He concluded, “My only objective is to create a truly good and engaging film. I`m confident I`ll be satisfied with the result, and I hope others will share that feeling.”
Cregger`s prior directorial work includes the successful 2022 horror film Barbarian, which was based on his original concept. After Barbarian`s success, he is directing another original project titled Weapons, set for an August release with Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. The Resident Evil movie, based on Capcom`s property, marks Cregger`s first time adapting a major franchise.
Barbarian wasn`t Cregger`s directorial debut; he previously co-directed the 2009 sex comedy Miss March with his late colleague Trevor Moore from the Whitest Kids U` Know troupe, a film that received negative reviews.
Regarding the game franchise, Resident Evil: Requiem is planned for release in February 2026 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Additionally, a mobile title, Resident Evil Survival Unit, is also in development.
