PlayStation 5 Update Introduces Enhanced Controller Pairing and Power Saving Mode

The PlayStation 5 is set to receive a new system update that introduces a convenient wireless controller-pairing feature, alongside a forthcoming “Power Saver” mode.

Sony has designed the DualSense controller and other PS5 peripherals with broad compatibility in mind, supporting PC, Mac, and mobile devices. This upcoming update simplifies the process of connecting controllers to multiple devices simultaneously, making it significantly easier to switch between them without needing to re-pair each time. Players will be able to pair up to four devices concurrently. For instance, a DualSense controller can be seamlessly switched between your PS5, a PC, or a smartphone.

Below are the instructions provided by Sony for pairing a DualSense controller to multiple devices and for switching between them.

How to Pair a DualSense Controller to Multiple Devices:

  1. Ensure the light bar and player indicator on your controller are off. If they are on, press and hold the PS button until they turn off.
  2. Press and hold one of the action buttons (triangle, circle, cross, or square) and the PS button for more than 5 seconds. The light bar and player indicator will flash twice.
  3. Activate Bluetooth on your device and select the option to add Bluetooth devices. Your device will detect nearby Bluetooth devices.
  4. Select your controller from the detected devices. The light bar will illuminate, and the player indicator lights will blink according to the slot number.

How to Switch Between Devices:

  1. Turn on the device you wish to connect to.
  2. Press and hold one of the action buttons and the PS button for approximately 3 seconds. When the light bar and player indicator blink, release both buttons. The light bar will illuminate, and the player indicator lights will blink according to the slot number.
Four slots are available for controller pairing.

Upcoming Power Saver Mode:

Beyond controller enhancements, a “Power Saver” mode is also planned for future release. This mode will allow select PS5 games to operate with reduced power consumption, contributing to Sony`s “Road to Zero” environmental initiative, which aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

When enabled, Power Saver mode will scale back the performance of certain PS5 games to help decrease the system`s power draw. Sony has indicated that this might involve limitations on VR mode and some gameplay features. More details, including supported games and estimated impact, will be shared closer to its launch.

It`s worth noting that Microsoft introduced an energy-saving mode for Xbox over a decade ago. While investigations have shown progress in energy efficiency for both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S compared to previous generations, energy usage in the newest games remains significantly higher.
