Bungie`s upcoming title, Marathon, originally set for a September launch, faced an indefinite delay in June. This decision coincided with reports suggesting Bungie`s full integration into PlayStation Studios, potentially impacting its autonomy. Adding to these significant shifts, CEO Pete Parsons has now declared his departure from the studio after more than twenty years of service.
Joining Bungie in 2002, Parsons initially served as Chief Operating Officer before ascending to the CEO role in early 2016. In an official statement posted on Bungie`s website, the company praised his leadership tenure as “the honor of a lifetime.” Parsons expressed profound pride in “the worlds we’ve built together and the millions of players who call them home.”
Concluding his announcement, Parsons named Justin Truman, the current Chief Development Officer, as Bungie`s incoming leader, offering his full endorsement for the succession.
“I have worked alongside Justin for many years,” Parsons affirmed. “His passion for our games, our team, and our players is unmatched. As a leader in engineering, production, and design—and most recently as the General Manager for Destiny 2 and our Chief Development Officer—he has been instrumental in bringing some of the most memorable moments in Bungie’s history to life. He lives and breathes this studio, and I have full confidence that he is the right person to lead Bungie forward.”
July 2024 saw significant layoffs at Bungie, affecting high-profile executives such as Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy. Concurrently, former employees voiced concerns, alleging a corporate culture driven by greed and toxicity. Early discussions around Marathon drew comparisons to Concord, Sony`s ill-fated live-service shooter, which was withdrawn shortly after its launch.
Despite past setbacks like Concord, Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to live-service games. Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, expressed optimism that Marathon will avoid Concord`s fate. Sony CFO Lin Tao recently indicated that Marathon is expected to launch by March 31, 2026, marking the end of Sony`s current fiscal year.
