Following the game`s announcement, the publisher clarified on Bluesky that both physical and digital versions of Octopath Traveler 0 for Switch 2 would exclusively operate on the newer console. While this is fairly standard, Square Enix subsequently stated that no cross-version upgrades would be supported, compelling players to purchase each desired version separately.
While disappointing, this news is hardly surprising, given Square Enix`s recent history of similar practices that have garnered criticism. Earlier this year, the company faced backlash for an analogous approach to the physical editions of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. What makes this situation even more peculiar is that this policy is clearly not Square Enix`s universal standard; for instance, the upcoming Final Fantasy Tactics remake will offer free upgrades between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. Numerous other developers have also provided free or paid upgrades for their Switch 2 titles, rendering Square Enix`s stance on Octopath Traveler 0 particularly baffling.
Adding to the disappointment, the Switch 2 version of Octopath Traveler 0 will be released on “Game-Key” cards, as indicated by the game`s box art. Unlike conventional Switch cartridges that contain all necessary game files, these alternatives require players to download the game content. This shift to Game-Key cards has become a point of contention for preservationists and enthusiasts who prefer fully self-contained physical editions. Consequently, prospective players and fans are once again compelled to choose between a technically inferior version of Octopath Traveler 0 for the original Switch (which at least comes on a cartridge) or an enhanced Switch 2 version that, in essence, is a digital-only acquisition. Based on the responses to Square Enix`s Bluesky post, neither option appears to satisfy the community.
Octopath Traveler 0 is scheduled for release on December 4, 2025, across Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
