Subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack are about to receive an exciting update to their Game Boy Advance collection. For the very first time, the service will introduce third-party titles, significantly expanding its retro gaming library.
Starting September 25, players can enjoy two iconic games from Namco (now Bandai Namco): the charming side-scrolling adventure, Klonoa: Empire of Dreams, and the addictive puzzle game, Mr. Driller 2. These additions are particularly notable because, until this point, all 25 GBA games available on the Nintendo Classics platform were published by Nintendo itself. This marks a new era for the GBA library on Switch Online, embracing beloved titles from other developers.
Featured Games
Klonoa: Empire of Dreams
Initially released in 2001, Klonoa: Empire of Dreams puts players in the shoes of the titular Namco mascot, Klonoa. His adventure begins as he must defeat four formidable monsters after a peculiar law outlaws dreaming. The gameplay combines platforming, puzzle-solving, and action, with Klonoa utilizing his unique Wind Ring to defeat enemies and progress through levels, collecting stars along the way. The Klonoa series, which had been relatively quiet for years—with its last new installment being a Wii remake in 2008—saw a resurgence with remasters of its first two titles in 2022.
Mr. Driller 2
A sequel to the popular arcade puzzle game, Mr. Driller 2, launched by Namco in 2000, challenges players to strategically drill and dig through colorful blocks. The objective is to reach the bottom of the stage while carefully managing a dwindling air supply. Both Mr. Driller 2 and Klonoa: Empire of Dreams are no strangers to re-releases, having previously been part of the Wii U’s Virtual Console, showcasing their enduring appeal.
Looking Ahead: Virtual Boy Games on the Horizon
This announcement comes hot on the heels of Nintendo`s latest Direct presentation, which delivered another surprising piece of news for Nintendo Classics enthusiasts: Virtual Boy games are on their way to the service. The entire catalog of 14 Virtual Boy titles is scheduled for release on February 17, 2026, although playing them will require a specific accessory.
