Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller & Best Alternatives

The official Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is now available for purchase on Amazon for $84, matching Walmart`s price and being $1 below its Manufacturer`s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). Its listing on Amazon followed the retailer`s resumption of selling Nintendo-published games. The Nintendo Switch 2 console and a Mario Kart Bundle are also offered, though currently available by invitation only.

Design and Ergonomics

The Switch 2 Pro Controller features a sleek matte black finish complemented by light gray triggers and shoulder buttons. This color scheme and matte texture give it a distinct appearance and a noticeably different tactile feel compared to the original`s translucent plastic with textured grips.

While the overall form factor remains quite similar, several notable changes have been introduced. Key additions include new back buttons, which can be remapped to any input by simply holding the Home button for a few seconds. Nintendo`s new `C` button, designed for GameChat, is conveniently positioned between the right stick and the D-pad. Furthermore, a 3.5mm audio jack is now located at the bottom of the controller.

Performance and Features

Like its predecessor, the new Pro Controller includes a built-in gyroscope for motion controls, advanced HD Rumble feedback, and NFC support for Amiibo figures. Nintendo has implemented enhancements to the rumble motors, motion controls, and analog sticks. Although the sticks do not utilize Hall Effect sensor technology, they offer a considerably smoother operation and produce less noise.

Detailed Look: 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller

The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller boasts four remappable buttons (two on the back, two on the shoulder), adjustable trigger locks with two stopping points, TMR electromagnetic sensors (which are superior to Hall Effect sensors), vibrant RGB lighting rings, and extensive customization options accessible via 8BitDo`s dedicated software suite on PC and Android platforms.

Users have the flexibility to configure up to three custom profiles, fine-tune stick and trigger sensitivity, define deadzones, modify rumble intensity, and set various lighting effects and colors. The Ultimate 2 Bluetooth comes complete with a matching charging dock, which includes a convenient slot for an optional USB-C dongle for 2.4GHz Wireless connectivity. While it`s currently unclear if the 2.4GHz wireless will function with the Switch 2, both Bluetooth and wired connections are expected to be seamless.

Another compelling alternative to the Switch 2 Pro Controller is the recently unveiled 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad. Scheduled for release on August 12 at a price of $70, the Pro 3 incorporates TMR sticks, trigger locks, and four remappable buttons— mirroring features found in the Ultimate 2. Additionally, it distinguishes itself with swappable magnetic face buttons and an extra pair of stick tops. These stick caps are designed in an arcade-style ball-top, adding a unique touch to the controller`s ergonomics.

The Pro 3 serves as the successor to the highly acclaimed Pro 2, which remains a top choice for Nintendo players who prefer PlayStation-style stick layouts, as well as for retro gaming enthusiasts. The Pro 3 connects wirelessly to Switch 2, original Switch, and PC via both 2.4GHz and Bluetooth. It is currently available for preorder in three distinct colors: Gray, G Classic, and a GameCube-inspired Purple. Each edition includes a matching charging dock.
