While Stephen King consistently releases new books and re-editions of his extensive bibliography, comprehensive box sets of his works are quite rare. This week marks a significant addition to the limited collection of King box sets available in the US with the launch of Classic King Box Set 1. This slipcased collection features three novels and is currently offered at a 20% discount, bringing the price down to $46.39 (originally $58). This release appears to be the first in a new series of matching box sets, all featuring striking vintage cover designs.
The Classic King Box Set 1 includes the 2024 trade paperback editions of three Stephen King novels from the early 1980s: Pet Sematary, Christine, and Cujo. Each book boasts a vintage cover with captivating artwork and old-style fonts. Although purchasing the three books separately might currently be slightly cheaper by about $10, acquiring the box set provides an exclusive display case, which some consider to be the finest among all available Stephen King box sets today.
Books in Classic King Box Set 1:
- Cujo (1981): This unsettling horror novel centers on a rabid Saint Bernard. It`s a quick and engaging read, famously known as a book King himself doesn`t recall writing due to his past struggles with substance use disorder. This detail was revealed in his acclaimed 2000 memoir, “On Writing,” a highly recommended read for King fans and aspiring fiction writers.
- Pet Sematary (1983): One of King`s most renowned works, this novel perfectly embodies his classic style. Set in Maine, the horror story revolves around a pet cemetery built on ancient burial grounds. Legend has it that pets buried there return from the dead, a phenomenon protagonist Louis Creed experiences firsthand when his family cat, Church, is hit by a car. Though Church returns, he is not the same. Louis tragically fails to learn his lesson, leading to escalating horror.
- Christine (1983): This supernatural horror novel tells the story of a possessed Plymouth Fury. While it offers a fun read and certainly qualifies as a “classic” due to its age, its somewhat absurd premise can detract from an otherwise interesting cast of characters, making it arguably the weakest of the three novels in this set.
Upcoming `Classic King` Editions
Given the “Classic King Box Set 1” title, it is highly probable that at least one more collection in this series will be released. Although not officially confirmed by Scribner, it is anticipated that “Classic King Box Set 2” will feature Misery, The Dead Zone, and Firestarter.
This anticipation is based on the fact that individual “Classic King” editions of these three novels are scheduled for release soon. This mirrors the release strategy of the first box set, where its component books were also published separately prior to the set.
- Misery (1987): Celebrated as a 1990 film starring James Caan and Kathy Bates, the original novel is also considered one of King`s finest. This psychological horror masterwork details Annie Wilkes trapping her favorite author, Paul Sheldon, and forcing him to revive a fictional character. The new cover art depicts Annie`s silhouette, holding her infamous axe.
- The Dead Zone (1979): King`s inaugural science fiction novel, it follows Johnny Smith, who gains clairvoyant abilities after waking from a coma, allowing him to foresee the future. It was adapted into a 1983 film starring Christopher Walken and a TV series in the 2000s.
- Firestarter (1980): Following “The Dead Zone,” this hybrid sci-fi horror novel introduces a young girl with pyrokinetic powers. The new edition spans 512 pages and features striking cover art.
Adaptations of the Classic King Novels
All six “Classic King” novels mentioned so far have been adapted into at least one feature film or television series. Several, such as “Pet Sematary” and “The Dead Zone,” have seen multiple adaptations or received sequels that diverge from the original source material to tell new stories within their respective universes.

Many of these movie adaptations have recently received 4K UHD remasters. Here`s a list of notable adaptations:

Other Stephen King Box Sets
As noted, only a few Stephen King box sets are readily available from major retailers. While more sets would likely exist if King wrote more direct sequels or series, the majority of his works are standalone stories, though many interconnected references appear throughout his vast output.

In 2019, Anchor released a box set titled Stephen King: Three Classic Novels, which includes his first three books: Carrie, `Salem`s Lot, and The Shining. This slipcased set of perennial classics is available for $26.74 (originally $57).
