New H.P. Lovecraft Box Set Unveiled with Striking 3D Cthulhu Design

H.P. Lovecraft’s profound influence on literature, cinema, television, and video games remains undeniable, thanks to his extensive catalog of chilling cosmic horror tales. His distinctive blend of unsettling otherworldly dread, infused with elements of science fiction, fantasy, and Gothic aesthetics—often accompanied by a palpable sense of the weird—is so iconic that the term “Lovecraftian” is widely used to describe works inspired by his unique vision. Seminal stories such as “The Call of Cthulhu” and “At the Mountains of Madness” continue to captivate readers almost a century after their initial publication. Now, these foundational narratives, along with all of Lovecraft’s other writings, are presented in a breathtaking new premium box set.

In a collaboration between the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society and publisher Weldon Owen (an imprint of Insight Editions), a comprehensive two-volume collection titled The H.P. Lovecraft Experience Deluxe Box Set has been meticulously crafted. Released today, August 5th, this exquisite set is available for purchase at $95 (originally $100).

This collection stands out as arguably the most visually stunning Lovecraft compilation accessible through major retailers or bookstores.

Spanning an impressive 1,888 pages, the collection is elegantly divided across two striking, dark green volumes. These hardbound books are meticulously crafted from leatherette, designed to evoke the appearance of high-quality tomes from Lovecraft’s own era. Both the covers and spines are adorned with intricate foil-stamped insignias and lettering, adding to their classic appeal.

The H.P. Lovecraft Experience encompasses the author’s entire literary output, making it a definitive single source for all his novels, novellas, short stories, and miscellaneous writings.

The two books are housed within a custom-sculpted display case featuring a brand-new, three-dimensional rendition of Cthulhu. When we speak of “3D,” we mean Cthulhu dramatically emerges from the case’s surface, lending an even more terrifying presence to the cosmic entity.

Beyond the two primary volumes, this oversized display box contains additional intriguing elements. The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has developed a brand-new Reader’s Guide, offering insightful examinations of ten of Lovecraft’s short stories. Authored by Sean Branney and Andrew Leman, co-founders of the Lovecraft Historical Society, this guidebook promises an engaging read for both seasoned aficionados and new readers. Designed to complement the main volumes, the Reader’s Guide is notebook-sized, maintaining the overarching theme of the collection’s unique design.

All supplementary materials in the set are intricately linked to Miskatonic University, the fictional Massachusetts institution that plays a pivotal role in many of Lovecraft’s narratives, particularly those involving the Cthulhu Mythos.

Dedicated Lovecraft enthusiasts will likely cherish the included diploma from Miskatonic University, ready for framing—but perhaps only after delving into “The Undergraduate Course Book,” presented as a small, thematic booklet. Other Miskatonic-themed collectibles within the box include a stylish bookmark, a library card, an embroidered patch, and a decal.

For those preferring digital convenience, The H.P. Lovecraft Experience is also available as a Kindle ebook for $20. While the digital version naturally omits the physical collectibles and premium presentation, it still provides access to both comprehensive volumes and the valuable Reader’s Guide.

Alternative Lovecraft Collections

Given that much of Lovecraft’s extensive body of work resides in the public domain, numerous editions and compilations are readily available, including many accessible for free online. However, this accessibility also means the market is flooded with a multitude of Lovecraft collections, some of which are unfortunately poorly designed or assembled by various obscure publishers.

It’s noteworthy that The H.P. Lovecraft Experience stands out as one of the rare complete editions of the author’s writings that is not only comprehensive but also boasts a genuinely appealing aesthetic. While more budget-friendly alternatives exist and are popular among readers, they often don’t offer the same level of completeness or premium presentation.

A commendable, more affordable choice is The H.P. Lovecraft Collection: 6-Book Deluxe Box Set. This set features clothbound editions of six of Lovecraft’s most celebrated works, presented in a display box. While its artwork and cover designs might not be overly elaborate, the books themselves are well-constructed. This collection is currently priced at $28 (originally $60). The included titles are:

  • At the Mountains of Madness
  • The Dunwich Horror
  • The Call of Cthulhu
  • The Shadow over Innsmouth
  • Polaris
  • The Color Out of Space
  • Rats in the Walls

The same publisher also released The Necronomicon: 5-Book Box Set in paperback in 2021. This “Necronomicon” compilation includes stories by Lovecraft himself, alongside Cthulhu Mythos tales penned by other authors. You can acquire The Necronomicon Box Set for $23 (originally $40).

For another highly regarded option, consider The Complete Fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, available for $14 (originally $18). This substantial 1,112-page hardcover, published by Chartwell Books in 2016, remains an excellent choice today. The Complete Tales of H.P. Lovecraft, released in 2019 by Rock Point, is essentially the same content but features more evocative cover art, albeit at a slightly higher price of approximately $19.60 (originally $35).

Fans of Lovecraft and horror manga enthusiasts will find great interest in the manga adaptations of Lovecraft’s chilling works. Penned and illustrated by Gou Tanabe, with English translations by Zack Davisson, these manga volumes are hauntingly beautiful. As evident from the cover art, Tanabe’s illustrations are truly exceptional.

Five Lovecraft manga adaptations have already been released in the U.S. by Dark Horse Manga. These include the 288-page adaptation of “The Call of Cthulhu” for $16 (originally $20), and “At the Mountains of Madness,” which offers a substantial 626-page hardcover Deluxe Edition for $26 (originally $50). The English translation of “The Shadow Out of Time” is slated for release on December 23rd and is currently available for preorder at $22.
