During the “Middle-earth: The Adventure Ahead” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, a new expansion for the survival crafting game The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria was unveiled. Named Durin`s Folk, this upcoming content is set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025. While specific details are scarce, a Steam announcement indicates players can expect to “continue the fight to restore Moria with an expanded end-game story, exciting new game mechanics, plus many unrevealed secrets!”
A brief teaser trailer accompanied the announcement, depicting a vast, empty hall and a grand door being opened by a group of dwarves. Voiceovers in the trailer include the notable line, “Khazad-dum is the home of Durin`s Folk.” For those unfamiliar with Tolkien lore, Khazad-dum is another name for Moria, suggesting this end-game focused expansion will indeed delve deeper into the game`s namesake. Durin himself is one of the seven ancestral fathers of the dwarves, foundational to the dwarven race.
Upon its release in 2023, Return to Moria received mixed reviews, holding a Metacritic score of 59 from critics and a user score of 6.8. However, the game appears to have gained more favor on Steam, where it currently boasts a “Very Positive” rating from player reviews.
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
