Updates on the Netflix BioShock film reveal a crucial detail regarding its narrative. Producer Roy Lee confirmed in a recent interview that the movie adaptation will draw its story directly from the original BioShock game.
Lee also mentioned that Netflix prefers to keep specifics confidential, but he firmly stated that the adaptation is “definitely” rooted in the 2007 classic.
Francis Lawrence, known for directing The Hunger Games series, is set to helm the BioShock movie. Lee confirmed this will be Lawrence`s next project following The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is currently filming in Spain and scheduled for a November 2026 release.
Regarding the script, Lee stated it is “currently in progress.” Earlier reports indicated contributions from Michael Green of Blade Runner 2049 and Justin Rhodes of Terminator: Dark Fate to previous script iterations.
Lee further explained that the BioShock film`s delay, necessitated by extensive script revisions, allowed Lawrence to direct his adaptation of Stephen King`s The Long Walk, set for a September 12 release.
With Lawrence having completed The Long Walk and already committed to Sunrise on the Reaping while the BioShock script was being developed, Lee noted that Lawrence would begin work on BioShock once his current Hunger Games project is finished.
In 2024, Lee also revealed that the BioShock movie`s scope had been reduced, aiming for a more “personal” narrative. This shift aligns with Netflix`s reported new strategy prioritizing quality and fiscal responsibility over sheer volume.
Meanwhile, in the BioShock game universe, a rumored remake of the first title has reportedly been canceled. The next main installment in the series continues development, though its studio has recently faced development challenges and staff reductions.
