Criterion, the esteemed studio celebrated for its work on the Burnout series and its long-standing involvement with the Need for Speed franchise, has officially adopted a new identity: `A Battlefield Studio.` This recent rebranding unequivocally signals their concentrated focus on the Battlefield series, thereby casting considerable doubt over the future trajectory of the cherished Need for Speed games.
The updated designation for Criterion appeared under its studio logo on EA`s official website, a detail initially brought to light by The Gamer and subsequently noted by a user within the Need for Speed subreddit community. Understandably, members of the community are expressing significant apprehension regarding the implications of this shift for the racing series, which nominally remains under Criterion`s oversight.
Fundamentally, this rebranding serves to formalize prior announcements. Earlier this year in February, EA disclosed its decision to integrate Criterion into the Battlefield Studios division, with the explicit aim of bolstering the single-player experience for Battlefield 6. Concurrently, it was announced that development on the next Need for Speed title would be temporarily paused, notwithstanding EA`s assurance that the franchise is not destined for extinction.
Criterion boasts a rich history with the Need for Speed series, contributing to titles as far back as 2010`s Hot Pursuit and reclaiming its role as the primary developer in 2020, following a shift of control back from Ghost Games. Their most recent contribution was Need for Speed Unbound, released in 2022. However, subsequent internal restructuring within EA led to the reallocation of a substantial portion of Criterion`s staff to support the Battlefield franchise.
While EA has articulated its intent to eventually revive the Need for Speed franchise, it remains ambiguous whether Criterion will be tasked with developing future installments, given its newly established role within Battlefield Studios. The current emphasis on Battlefield 6 is entirely logical, especially considering the highly anticipated shooter is scheduled for release on October 10, 2025.
