Monster Hunter Wilds: An Early Expansion to Combat Declining Sales

Monster Hunter Wilds initially had a strong launch in early 2025, appearing set to become one of the year`s top-selling games. However, Capcom`s popular franchise has encountered significant challenges due to declining sales. This decline is likely the reason why the publisher has decided to release the Monster Hunter Wilds expansion earlier than anticipated.

Capcom has brought forward the Wilds expansion`s release date from late September to August 13. This upcoming update will introduce a new difficulty tier, a revised rewards system, weapon balance adjustments, and various other improvements.

Furthermore, Capcom`s quarterly report for investors revealed disappointing figures for Monster Hunter Wilds. Between April 1 and June 30, Wilds sold only 477,000 copies, a modest increase compared to its predecessor, Monster Hunter Rise, which sold 389,000 copies during the same period. Interestingly, Devil May Cry 5 significantly outsold Monster Hunter Wilds in that quarter, moving 1,782,000 units, possibly boosted by its Netflix anime adaptation.

Despite selling 10,585,000 copies since its release earlier this year, according to Capcom`s report, there have been clear indicators of player dissatisfaction with Monster Hunter Wilds, particularly concerning its PC port. Earlier this summer, Monster Hunter World even surpassed Wilds in concurrent Steam players. Players also posted numerous negative reviews on Steam, citing performance issues and a lack of compelling endgame content in Wilds.

While Monster Hunter Wilds saw a surge in Steam players following Capcom`s most recent major update, not all of the game`s underlying problems were fully resolved. It remains to be seen whether the forthcoming expansion will successfully turn the tide for Monster Hunter Wilds.
