Retro gaming enthusiasts might soon face a tough decision as ModRetro announced its modern Nintendo 64 homage console will retail for $200. Unveiled last year, this device could present a compelling alternative to the $250 Analogue 3D.
Similar to the Analogue 3D, the M64 is an FPGA-based console, engineered to faithfully recreate the original N64 hardware experience. This approach mirrors ModRetro`s successful ModRetro Chromatic, a meticulously crafted Game Boy successor that blends contemporary features with an authentic handheld gaming feel, capable of playing original Game Boy cartridges. Its premium construction also ensures a comfortable user experience.
ModRetro has yet to disclose further specifics about the M64. However, a trailer shared by founder Palmer Luckey hinted at a release date with a “do not open until Christmas” message. It remains to be seen if the M64 will incorporate advanced functionalities found in the Chromatic, such as built-in video streaming and multiplayer capabilities.
FPGA consoles are widely regarded by purists as the superior choice, allowing for high-definition gameplay via HDMI on contemporary displays. The Analogue 3D notably supports 4K output and offers various filters to mimic the aesthetics of a classic CRT television. It will be intriguing to discover if the M64 can deliver a comparable visual experience.
For those who prefer Nintendo`s classic handheld systems, the ModRetro Chromatic is currently available for purchase, with new stock and color options recently released.
