ModRetro Chromatic Is Back: New Colors, Games, and Accessories

ModRetro has announced the return of its modernized Game Boy handheld, the Chromatic. Following a rapid sell-out last year, new inventory is now available. The console is being offered in seven new color variations, alongside the introduction of fresh games and accessories. Buyers can choose between two models: a $200 version featuring scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, and a premium $300 version equipped with highly durable Sapphire Glass.

The Chromatic`s game library is also expanding with five new titles covering various genres. “Sabrina: The Animated Series – Zapped” is a re-release of the cartoon-based platformer. “Wicked Plague” offers an old-school Metroidvania experience, while “Self-Simulated” challenges players with precision platforming across over 100 levels. The new lineup is completed by “First Contact Protocol,” an adventure-puzzle game featuring branching narratives and cutscenes, and “Gravitorque,” a puzzle-platformer.

Every Chromatic console comes bundled with the classic game Tetris. ModRetro has committed to ongoing support and updates, including upcoming native streaming capabilities to platforms like Discord, Mac, and PC without requiring additional hardware.

Several new accessories are also launching:

  • ModRetro Rechargeable Power Core ($29.99): A battery pack providing up to 16 hours of extra playtime.
  • ModRetro Link Cable ($14.99): Allows direct head-to-head multiplayer gaming between two Chromatic units.
  • ModRetro Mod Kit ($14.99): Contains high-quality interchangeable parts for customizing the handheld.
  • ModRetro Koss Porta Pro ($49.99): Retro-styled headphones designed for use with the Chromatic.

While other modern devices emulate the Game Boy experience, the ModRetro Chromatic stands out. It replicates the look and feel of a classic Game Boy but is built with high-quality components, resulting in an exceptionally sturdy handheld. Critically, it is fully compatible with original Game Boy cartridges.

Steven Petite`s review on GameSpot praised it as a “superb recreation of the Game Boy Color.” He noted, “If you want a near-exact replica of your childhood Game Boy with a backlit screen, this is the handheld for you. At $199… the Chromatic is a bargain due to its ridiculously premium build. But this is a bargain for a very specific type of retro gamer.”
