IO Interactive, the acclaimed studio behind the Hitman series, recently ventured into the game publishing arena with its IOI Partners program. Their inaugural published title, MindsEye, developed by Leslie Benzies` Build a Rocket Boy (a studio founded by a former Rockstar developer), faced a significantly challenging debut. The game garnered widespread criticism, particularly concerning its technical performance and overall stability. In light of this reception, IO`s CEO, Hakan Abrak, has addressed the launch and openly discussed the potential future direction of the company`s publishing endeavors.
In an interview with IGN, Abrak clarified that the initial motivation behind partnering with Build a Rocket Boy was to offer support, driven by IO Interactive`s belief in the fledgling studio`s “great ideas.” IO`s role primarily focused on assisting with the distribution of MindsEye, as Build a Rocket Boy was a brand-new developer with no prior game releases.
Acknowledging the difficulties encountered, Abrak candidly admitted, “Well, that was definitely tough, right? It was a tough reception. It wasn`t what they hoped for, and also what we didn`t hope for at IOI Partners.”
Build a Rocket Boy is reportedly working diligently to enhance MindsEye and rebuild player trust. Abrak expressed continued confidence in the team, stating his belief that they possess “tons of potential.” MindsEye recently received its fourth substantial update, a considerable 15GB patch aimed at addressing bugs and improving performance. A fifth major patch is also expected soon.
Regarding the continuation of the IOI Partners publishing program, Abrak remained non-committal. He confirmed that IO will proceed with publishing its own internal projects, including the highly anticipated James Bond game, 007 First Light. However, when questioned about future third-party publishing partnerships, Abrak concluded that the matter “remains to be seen.”
007 First Light Details Unveiled
In a separate and more positive development, 007 First Light was prominently featured in a recent PlayStation State of Play broadcast. During this event, IO Interactive officially announced the game`s release date, showcased new gameplay footage, and unveiled a premium $300 collector`s edition which notably includes a replica Golden Gun.
